Business Requirements describe what is required from the business perspective. These are the critical activities that a business or enterprise needs to perform in order to achieve its organizational objectives while remaining solution independent.

In the context of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), defining Business Requirements requires elicitation and documentation of business requirements of business users. It also includes the study of As-Is processes in order to define the target To-Be processes.

The Business Requirements include:

  3. Background and Reasons for Change
  4. Business Stakeholders details
  5. Success factors for future or target state
  6. Constraints imposed
  7. Business Process Models and Business Process Analysis
  8. Logical Data Model and Data Dictionary References

  10. Data Flow Diagrams
The Business Requirements are delivered through software, products, systems and processes. They are recorded in a document called as Business Requirements Document (BRD).
Myths vs Reality about Business Requirements:
  • Business Requirements are not the same as objectives or expected benefits ot features of the software, product or system to be created
  • In place of being the objectives, the Business Requirements actually meet the objectives.
  • They are not the same as Product Requirements
  • They are not just High Level Requirements, they can be defined at a detailed level
  • Non-Functional constraints (or Non-Functional specifications) can be the same as Business Requirements – like necessary performance, security, or safety
