Rules for Utilizing Sequence Flow Elements in a BPMN Model​

• A Sequence flow connects Activities, Events and Gateways which  are Flow Object elements in BPMN and nothing else
• A Sequence flow crosses boundaries of a lane. In fact two or more lanes in a single pool will have common start and end events. So the sequence flows will connect the Activities, Events and Gateways located across various lanes in the same pool.
• A Sequence flow can not cross boundaries of a pool. Participants in a BPM located across different pools communicate with each-other through message flows as you can see in the above visual.
